“Can an explanation be useful even if it might change?” 먼저 우리말로 자신의 답을 정하세요. 그런 다음 “Yes, because new evidence can improve it.”

Starlight offers a way to explore the difference between scientific explanations and historical interpretations.

2023 EBS English Reading Practice, Lesson 1 Passage 01: Understanding Scientific and Historical Explanations Through Starlight

What Is This Passage Comparing?

At the heart of this passage is the difference between scientific explanations and historical interpretations. The opening sentence may leave you short of breath, but its central question is simple: “When people look at the same facts, how far can they agree on an explanation?” Hold on to that question before taking the sentence apart word by word. You do not need to press every button the moment you board a spaceship.

The writer suggests that a scientific hypothesis may change later, even though experts can broadly agree on the best explanation available now. Explanations for the causes of a historical event, on the other hand, may continue to compete. The point is not that science is true and history is false. It is to distinguish observed facts from explanations of those facts—and to notice how much agreement each explanation attracts.

Starlight Gives Us a Way
                   to See a Hypothesis

Suppose we want to know whether a distant star has a planet. If its light dims slightly at regular intervals, we might hypothesize that a planet is passing in front of it. The change in brightness recorded by a telescope is observational data. “A planet is passing by” is an explanation of that data. We cannot order a cake to celebrate a new exoplanet after a single blink. We need to consider other possible causes and repeat the observations.

After several checks, scientists may agree on the explanation that best fits the available data. New evidence could still lead them to revise it. That is the idea behind the passage’s phrase provisional hypotheses. “Provisional” does not mean “anything goes.” It means an explanation remains open to revision while standing up well to the evidence we have so far.

Historical Facts and Interpretations of Causes Are Different

Now put down the telescope and open a history book. The passage uses the English Civil War to show that establishing what happened is different from explaining why it happened. One historian might focus on conflicts between political groups; another might place greater weight on class or ideology. They are looking at the same constellation but drawing different lines between its stars.

That does not mean historians are free to change the facts. The passage focuses on explanations of causes rather than the facts themselves. Nor do we need to memorize “historians never agree” as a universal rule. For this reading exercise, follow the direction of the writer’s argument. Keeping a writer’s claim separate from a claim about the entire world helps us avoid traps in English reading questions.

In English Reading,
Follow the Connections First

The opening phrase critical distinction means “an important difference.” The passage then describes scientific explanations. When we reach on the other hand, our attention shifts to historical explanations. The final example supports that comparison. If a long noun phrase pulls you off course, return to the main route: science offers explanations that can change but may win broad agreement; historical facts can be established while their causes remain open to competing interpretations.

Once you can see that route, questions about the topic or a missing word become easier. Memorizing individual words alone will not show you the passage’s orbit. Mark the point where a connecting phrase changes direction, and check which idea each example supports. It helps to see the whole constellation before zooming in on one star.

Read, Think, Then Speak

Here is today’s speaking question: “Can an explanation be useful even if it might change?” Decide on your answer in your own language first. Then say something short, such as, “Yes, because new evidence can improve it.” The goal is to put your own thought into a sentence rather than recite an answer. When that feels comfortable, add an example from starlight observations or a historical event and make it two sentences.

This passage compares scientific explanations with historical interpretations. Starlight helps us picture the relationship between observations and hypotheses. Today, instead of racing through seven sentences, read one idea and put it into your own words. That is the moment your English first launches beyond the workbook.
