자동 저장되는 줄 알았다
유튜브에서 범죄 추적 영상을 보다 놀란 순간이 있었다.
조사 과정에서 구글 타임라인으로 특정 인물의 이동 경로를 복원하고 있었기 때문이다.
마지막 방문 장소, 이동 시간, 머문 위치가 지도 위에 남아 있었다.
그걸 보고 바로 내 휴대폰을 확인했다.
그런데 의외로, 내 타임라인 기능은 꺼져 있었다.
구글 타임라인은 완전 자동이 아니다
많은 사람들이 스마트폰이면 이동 기록이 자동 저장된다고 생각한다.
하지만 실제로는:
* 위치 기록 활성화
* Google Maps 권한 허용
* 정확한 위치 사용
이 세 가지가 켜져 있어야 타임라인이 작동한다.
설정을 끄면 인간의 궤도도 사라진다.
인간은 디지털 별자리를 남긴다
천문학에서는 이미 사라진 별도 흔적을 남긴다.
별빛은 수백 년, 수천 년 동안 우주를 날아간 뒤 뒤늦게 관측된다.
과학자들은 그 흔적을 통해 별의 위치와 움직임을 계산한다.
구글 타임라인도 비슷하다.
카페에 머문 시간, 병원 방문 기록, 이동한 거리, 자주 지나가는 길들이 작은 좌표처럼 저장된다.
인간도 디지털 우주 속에서 별자리처럼 기록되고 있는 셈이다.
GPS는 현대의 망원경이 되었다
과거의 항해사는 별자리를 보며 바다를 건넜다.
지금은 스마트폰이 인간의 이동을 기록한다.
주머니 속 작은 기계는:

직접 타임라인을 켜고 보니 느낌이 달랐다.
단순한 편의 기능이라기보다, 보이지 않는 우주 지도 위에 하루가 새겨지는 기분에 가까웠다.
